October 9, 2009. Bellevue, Neb.
Today, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recognized Kiewit Building Group’s Bellevue Medical Center project for participating in the STAR Voluntary Protection Program (VPP). A ceremony was held at the project site today, during which representatives of Kiewit and Bellevue Medical Center were presented with an OSHA VPP STAR flag.
The VPP STAR program recognizes exemplary occupational safety and health protection measures. Created in 1982, OSHA’s VPP recognize worksites that show excellence in occupational safety and health. Sites are committed to effective employee protection beyond the requirements of OSHA standards. VPP participants develop and implement systems to effectively identify, evaluate, prevent, and control occupational hazards to prevent employee injuries and illnesses. As a result, the average VPP worksite has a lost workday incidence rate at least 50 percent below the average of its industry.
Kiewit spokesman Kent Grisham said, “The Bellevue Medical Center project is the only construction site in Nebraska at this time to hold the VPP Star designation. That’s a true honor for us because it’s a visible and real way of showing that we don’t just talk about safety, we live it. Being ‘Kiewit Safe’ truly is the number one priority for anyone with the company.”
The Bellevue Medical Center will house 265,000 square feet of comprehensive patient services including emergency care, obstetrics, inpatient and outpatient surgery, intensive care, cardiac catheterization, pharmacy, radiology and lab testing. Current plans allow for approximately 100 private inpatient, labor and delivery (LDRP), Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and observation beds with ability to add 100 additional beds in the future.
A new medical office building adds another 60,000 square feet to the project. Located adjacent to the main hospital, it will enhance patient care and convenience by providing additional areas for clinics and offering state of-the-art diagnostic services to assist physicians in prompt diagnosis and treatment.
